Planning to rent for fewer than the minimum nights? No problem! The minimum spend is $99 (tax included), even if you return the gear early. Simply book your kit on our website and add a note with your planned return day and time.

🚙 Vehicles & Rentals

What fuel should I use?

All our vehicles run on Unleaded 95 or 98. Please return the car with a full tank to avoid extra charges.

Do I need to return the car clean?

Not perfectly spotless, just no major mud or sand. If it comes back super dirty, we’ll charge an $80 cleaning fee (from your bond).

Want to clean it yourself? A $10 self-serve carwash does the trick, here our recommended place.

Does the car come with insurance? How does the bond/deposit work?

All vehicles include MAIB insurance, which covers passengers’ hospital expenses in case of an accident.

We don’t sell extra insurance, instead, we work with a bond system. You’ll leave a refundable deposit ($1000–$1500) at pick-up, which covers potential damage. If everything’s fine at drop-off, you get it all back.

We recommend having personal roadside assistance, as basic support doesn’t cover things like lost keys or flat tyres. 😊

Can I rent if I have a provisional licence or I’m under 21?

As we are a small family business, we are more flexible in regards to this, so you can drive with a provisional license. However, you must display your P plates at all times. Please keep in mind that Explora’s insurance will not cover any damage to the car under these circumstances.

I don’t have an Aussie bank account – how do I pay?

No stress! You can pay:

10% upfront by credit/debit card on our website, when your booking is done.
The rest + bond at pick-up (bank transfer or EFTPOS available)
We also offer international transfers in multiple currencies (EUR, USD, CAD NZD, SGD, etc.), or you can pay in cash.

Can I take the car to Bruny Island?

Absolutely! You can explore the whole island.

Just note: if you’re heading to Cloudy Corner, you’ll have to drive on the beach – which, again, isn’t covered by our insurance. There are plenty of other great campgrounds that are easier to access. 🏕️

🏕️ Camping Gear

Is camping gear included for free?

Yes! Camping gear is included with your car rental. If you’re a 4th traveller, there’s just a small extra fee of $18/day for the additional gear.

Can I rent just the camping gear if I already booked a car elsewhere?

Yep! Camping gear is just $18/day per person, and you can pick it up from Howrah. Just book through the Camping Gear section on our site..

Can you provide camping gear for more than 3 people?

We can! There’s an extra cost of $18/day per person for groups over 3. Just keep in mind – this option is only available for our SUVs. City cars don’t have enough space to fit the extra gear comfortably.

Can I carry the camping gear in my backpack?

Not really 😅 Our gear is designed for road trips, not treks. It includes full-size tents, thick sleeping mats, cooking gear and more—awesome for car camping, but way too bulky for a backpack.

Do you rent gear for multi-day hikes?

Our current gear is perfect for travellers exploring Tassie by car, but it’s not ideal for long hikes or overnight treks. That said, we’re working on lighter options for hikers! Can I rent items separately, like just a tent or sleeping bag?

Generally, we don’t rent individual items on their own, but we’re flexible! If your request meets our minimum spend of $99, we’re happy to help when possible. Just shoot us a message at info@explora.au with what you’re after, and we’ll do our best to sort you out

🧭 Booking & Logistics

Where do I collect and return the car in Hobart?

Our pick-up point is in Howrah (postcode 7018). We’re a small family business without a physical office, so for privacy and security, we’ll send you the exact address by email a few days before your booking. 😊

My flight arrives outside of your hours, what can I do?

No worries! We’re pretty flexible. Just shoot us a message or email and we’ll sort something out for you.

Do you offer Airport pick-up or drop-off?

Not at the moment. But no stress! We’re just 15 minutes away from Hobart Airport by taxi or Uber, and we’re super flexible with pick-up and drop-off times. 😉

What is a National Park Pass? Can I borrow one?

The pass gives you access to Tassie’s national parks. You’ll need to get your own, either online here or from local visitor centres. If you email it to info@explora.au, we’ll print it and pop it in your car. Easy!
