The whole service was just perfect for my 7-days roadtrip in Tassie! I’ve hired a nice Toyota Kluger with the camping gear included, which had everything I needed. The sleeping bag, the additional blanket and the pillow were nice and clean. Joice has been very kind and helpful, making my first roadtrip unforgettable.

Explora really made our trip to Tasmania special. When I first heard about a service that provides both a car and camping gear together, I couldn’t believe it. The price is very fair for everything you get. The team is very friendly and helpful, and they are happy to assist with any questions or requests.

Could not recommend Explora enough! We had an amazing 7-day trip to Tassie, and Explora provided everything we could have possibly needed for a fraction of the price of other options. The car was comfortable, and all the camping equipment was in perfect condition, and kept dry from a night of torrential rain. Joice was very friendly and helpful, and made a very smooth pickup and drop off!

Not at all. The car comes pre-packed and ready to go, the tent goes up in a few minutes, and at pickup we walk you through every item so you know exactly how it all works.
Plenty of our customers had never camped before their trip. If anything comes up along the way, we’re a phone call or WhatsApp message away.
Every car comes with a full camping setup, free. Tent, sleeping bags, mats, pillows, chairs, a table, a cooler and cooking gear. Just bring your clothes. Everything else is ready to go.
Yes. Every rental includes collision damage cover plus MAIB, which covers passenger injury. If something happens, the most you’d pay is the excess in your rental agreement, and that’s what your bond is for ($1,000, or $1,500 for under-25s and P-platers).
The bond is a hold, not a charge. Leave it as a card pre-authorisation, bank transfer or cash, whichever suits you, and if the car comes back fine you get it all back.
Tyres, windscreen and underbody aren’t covered (standard across Tassie rentals), and we recommend personal roadside assistance for things like lost keys or flat tyres.
Pick-up and drop-off is in Hobart, conveniently located near the airport and CBD. Exact address is provided when you book.
Short answer: no. Tasmania has plenty of free and cheap campsites, but you need to use designated camping areas. Pulling over on the side of the road or in a random car park and setting up a tent isn’t allowed, and rangers and councils do check, with fines that can run into the hundreds.
The good news is that designated spots are everywhere and many are free. Download WikiCamps or CamperMate before you arrive, both apps show every campsite, toilet, dump point and free spot in the state, with reviews from other travellers. At pickup we’ll also point you to our favourite spots for your route.
Yes, most of our international guests do. You need a full licence you’ve held for at least 12 months. If it’s in English, you’re set. If not, bring an English translation or an International Driving Permit (a small booklet you get back home before you fly). Just bring the real licence with you.
Yes. You can rent from age 18, even on P plates. The only difference is the bond: $1,500 instead of $1,000. Same cars, same gear, same freedom.
Don’t worry, small scratches happen. We use a set damage fee chart (Section 16 of our T&Cs) so there are no surprises: every type of damage has a fixed price, from $80 for a small polishable scuff up to $700 for a dent that needs a panel repair.
Minor marks come out of your bond and that’s it, no extra bill. For anything bigger, the most you can lose is your bond, that’s the cap.
Tyres, windscreen and underbody are the exception and are charged at cost. If anything happens, your safety comes first, and you’ll always see photos and the exact charge from the chart before anything is deducted.
Not sure how a mark would be classed? Ask us and we’ll tell you straight.
Almost anywhere fun. Our cars handle sealed and good gravel roads just fine. To keep everyone safe, please skip beaches, riverbeds, flooded roads, 4WD-only tracks, and snow zones like Cradle Mountain in winter.
Not sure if a road’s okay? Just ask, we know them well.
We hold a refundable bond during your trip: $1,000 if you’re 25 or older, $1,500 if you’re under 25 or on P plates. Bring the car back in good shape with a full tank and we release it fast, same day for daytime drop-offs, next morning if it’s after hours.
If you left it as a card pre-authorisation, your bank may take a few days to make the hold disappear from your statement, but nothing was ever charged.
Yes! As a small family business we’re more flexible than the big companies, P-platers are welcome from age 18. Just display your P plates at all times, and note the bond is $1,500 (same as for under-25 drivers). Learner permits are the only licences we can’t accept.

Will I freeze in a tent in winter?

We don't own any camping gear at all.

What if we pick the wrong spots and waste the trip?

This seems complicated to organise in time.

All our vehicles run on Unleaded 95 or 98. Please return the car with a full tank to avoid extra charges.
Not perfectly spotless, just no major mud or sand. If it comes back super dirty, we’ll charge an $80 cleaning fee (from your bond).
Want to clean it yourself? A $10 self-serve carwash does the trick, here our recommended place.
All vehicles include MAIB insurance, which covers passengers’ hospital expenses in case of an accident.
We don’t sell extra insurance, instead, we work with a bond system. You’ll leave a refundable deposit ($1000–$1500) at pick-up, which covers potential damage. If everything’s fine at drop-off, you get it all back.
We recommend having personal roadside assistance, as basic support doesn’t cover things like lost keys or flat tyres. 😊
As we are a small family business, we are more flexible in regards to this, so you can drive with a provisional license. However, you must display your P plates at all times. Please keep in mind that Explora’s insurance will not cover any damage to the car under these circumstances.
No stress! You can pay:
10% upfront by credit/debit card on our website, when your booking is done.
The rest + bond at pick-up (bank transfer or EFTPOS available)
We also offer international transfers in multiple currencies (EUR, USD, CAD NZD, SGD, etc.), or you can pay in cash.
Absolutely! You can explore the whole island.
Just note: if you’re heading to Cloudy Corner, you’ll have to drive on the beach – which, again, isn’t covered by our insurance. There are plenty of other great campgrounds that are easier to access. 🏕️
Yes! Camping gear is included with your car rental. If you’re a 4th traveller, there’s just a small extra fee of $18/day for the additional gear.
Yep! Camping gear is just $18/day per person, and you can pick it up from Howrah. Just book through the Camping Gear section on our site..
We can! There’s an extra cost of $18/day per person for groups over 3. Just keep in mind – this option is only available for our SUVs. City cars don’t have enough space to fit the extra gear comfortably.
Not really 😅 Our gear is designed for road trips, not treks. It includes full-size tents, thick sleeping mats, cooking gear and more—awesome for car camping, but way too bulky for a backpack.
Our current gear is perfect for travellers exploring Tassie by car, but it’s not ideal for long hikes or overnight treks. That said, we’re working on lighter options for hikers! If you’re planning a hike and need gear, feel free to email us at info@explora.au, we’d love to chat and see how we can help.
Generally, we don’t rent individual items on their own, but we’re flexible! If your request meets our minimum spend of $99, we’re happy to help when possible. Just shoot us a message at info@explora.au with what you’re after, and we’ll do our best to sort you out
We’re a small family business without a physical office yet, so for privacy and security, we’ll send you the exact pick up point by email a few days before your booking. 😊
No worries! We’re pretty flexible. Just shoot us a message or email and we’ll sort something out for you.
Call us straight away at +61 400 591 150. We’ll guide you through the steps and get everything sorted.
The pass gives you access to Tassie’s national parks. You’ll need to get your own, either online here or from local visitor centres. If you email it to info@explora.au, we’ll print it and pop it in your car. Easy!
