DAY1

Hobart

No driving ·take it slow, the trip starts tomorrow

  • Stock up on groceries before you leave tomorrow. Hobart has the best supermarkets you'll see for a while so buy more than you think you need
  • Salamanca Place in the morning for coffee and a wander. If it's a Saturday the market is one of the best in Australia
  • Battery Point is a 10 minute walk from Salamanca. Quiet streets, old cottages and a completely different pace to the waterfront
  • MONA is open Friday to Monday and worth 3 hours minimum if your timing lines up. One of the most unusual museums in the world and it happens to be in Hobart

⛺ Camp tonight: The Lea Bush Campground (free, 15 minutes from the city) or Seven Mile Beach Campground (around $15 per night, right on the beach).

DAY2

Hobart to Port Arthur

1.5 hrs driving · an easy first driving day

  • The Tessellated Pavement at Eaglehawk Neck is right on the way. Strange natural rock formation that looks almost man-made. Worth 20 minutes
  • Port Arthur Historic Site in the afternoon. One of the best preserved convict sites in the world and genuinely moving to walk around. Allow 3 to 4 hours minimum
  • The guided ghost tour runs at night if you want something different after dinner. Book ahead

⛺ Camp tonight: Fortescue Bay Campground (around $13 per night, national park, beautiful sheltered bay) or Stewart’s Bay Lodge camping near Port Arthur.

DAY3

Tasman Peninsula

No driving · the walking day

  • Cape Hauy Track is the best walk on the peninsula. About 4 hours return, sea cliffs dropping hundreds of metres straight into the ocean and dolerite columns that look completely surreal. One of the great coastal walks in Australia
  • Devil's Kitchen and Tasman Arch are a short drive from the campground and worth an hour in the afternoon
  • Swim at Fortescue Bay before dinner if the weather is good. One of the nicest sheltered bays on the peninsula

DAY4

Tasman Peninsula to Maria Island

2.5hrs driving ·driving to Triabunna, then 30 min ferry


  • Drive north to Triabunna where the ferry departs. Book your tickets ahead at sealink.com.au, especially in peak season
  • 30 minute ferry crossing with good views. Coffee on board
  • On the island there are no cars, no shops and no noise. Free trolleys are available at the ferry terminal to move your camping gear to the campsite
  • The Painted Cliffs are a 20 minute walk from Darlington and one of the most photographed spots on the island. Go at low tide
  • Wildlife everywhere from the moment you step off the ferry. Wombats, Cape Barren geese, Bennett's wallabies and Forester kangaroos all completely unbothered by people
  • Fossil Cliffs and Bishop and Clerk are worth the walk if you have the energy. Bishop and Clerk is a full day hike with views across the whole island

⛺ Camp tonight: Darlington Campground on the island, free with your Parks Pass. Bring all your food and water as there is nothing to buy on the island.

DAY5

Maria Island to Freycinet

1.5hrs driving ·from Triabunna


  • Slow morning on the island before catching the ferry back to Triabunna
  • Check the ferry timetable when you book and don't cut the last one close
  • Drive north up the east coast to Freycinet. The Tasman Highway is scenic and there's no need to rush
  • Arrive in the early afternoon. Honeymoon Bay is right near the campground and perfect for a swim after the drive

⛺ Camp tonight: Freycinet National Park Campground (around $13 per night, book ahead in summer) or Friendly Beaches just outside the park, which is free and right on the water.

DAY6

Freycinet

No driving · the big walking day

  • Wineglass Bay Lookout walk in the morning. 2.5 hours return, moderate climb, one of the genuinely great views in Australia. Go early before it gets busy
  • More energy? Continue down to Wineglass Bay beach itself and add another hour each way. Worth it
  • Sleepy Bay in the afternoon. Five minutes from the campground and one of the most beautiful small bays on the east coast
  • Sunset from Cape Tourville Lighthouse. Easy walk, incredible light

DAY7

Freycinet to Bay of Fires

1.5 hrs driving · slow morning allowed

  • Mount Amos before you leave if you want a serious morning. Steep scramble, about 2.5 hours return, views over Wineglass Bay from above. Only for confident walkers and dry conditions
  • Everyone else: slow breakfast at Honeymoon Bay then hit the road
  • Stop at Bicheno on the way. Good bakery and the blowhole is worth 20 minutes if there's swell
  • Arrive at Bay of Fires in the early afternoon and find your spot

⛺ Camp tonight: Swimcart Beach or Jeanneret Beach, completely free and right on the water. Cosy Corner North is another favourite further along. In peak season arrive by early afternoon to get a good spot.

DAY8

Full day at Bay of Fires

No driving · the day most people say was their favourite

Bay of Fires | Explora
  • Walk north along the beach in the morning. The further you go the fewer people you see
  • Swim in water that genuinely looks too clear to be real
  • Drive down to Binalong Bay for lunch and supplies. About 10 minutes and there's a good café there
  • Little Blue Lake is 30 minutes inland and worth the detour. A vivid blue crater lake that looks completely out of place in the Tasmanian bush
  • Back at camp for dinner and sunset over the water

DAY9

Bay of Fires to Cradle Mountain via Launceston

4 hrs driving · the long day, broken up well

  • Leave Bay of Fires after a slow morning
  • Launceston is your halfway stop. Cataract Gorge is 10 minutes from the city centre, free, and one of the most surprising things in Tasmania. A proper gorge with wildlife and swimming right on the edge of a city. Allow 1.5 hours
  • Grab lunch in Launceston before continuing west to Cradle Mountain
  • Arrive at Cradle Mountain in the late afternoon. Enchanted Walk is a gentle 45 minute loop through rainforest, good for stretching your legs after a long day in the car
  • Wombats at Ronny Creek around dusk, almost every evening

⛺ Camp tonight: Cradle Mountain Fishery and Camping (around $30 per night). It gets cold up here even in summer. Our sleeping bags are rated for it.

DAY10

Cradle Mountain

No driving · the alpine day

  • Dove Lake circuit in the morning. Six kilometres, about 2.5 hours, and the view of the mountain reflected in the lake is the one you've seen in every Tasmania photo
  • Marion's Lookout after lunch if you have the energy. Gets you properly above the treeline and adds about an hour
  • Barn Bluff is a full day extension for serious walkers. One of the best peaks in the park with views all the way to the west coast on a clear day

DAY11

Cradle Mountain to Strahan

2 hrs driving · west coast bound

  • Drive west through Tullah and Queenstown. The landscape changes completely as you drop into the west. Rainforest, button grass plains, rivers the colour of tea
  • Stop at the Iron Blow Lookout above Queenstown. The bare hills around town are the result of a century of copper smelting and look completely alien
  • Arrive in Strahan in the early afternoon. Walk the boardwalk, have a look at the harbour
  • Book the Gordon River Cruise for tomorrow morning if you haven't already

DAY12

Strahan to Mt Field

3.5 hrs driving · through the heart of the island

  • Gordon River Cruise in the morning if you booked it. Ancient Huon pines, mirror-flat water and complete silence. Full morning
  • Drive east through Queenstown and up through the Derwent Valley to Mt Field National Park
  • Russell Falls on arrival. One of the best easy walks in Tasmania, about an hour return, and the tallest you'll see on this trip
  • Tall Trees Walk nearby. Giant swamp gums that have been growing for centuries

DAY13

Mt Field to Bruny Island

2 hrs driving · to Kettering, then 15 min ferry

  • Morning at Mt Field if you want more. Lake Dobson is a short drive up into the alpine zone and worth an hour
  • Drive south to Kettering where the ferry departs for Bruny Island. Ferries run regularly so no need to book ahead, just turn up
  • On the island, The Neck is your first stop. A narrow sandy isthmus between North and South Bruny with a penguin colony and one of the best views on the island
  • Adventure Bay in the afternoon. Calm water, good beach, very relaxed energy
  • One night or two? One night is enough to see the highlights. Two nights lets you explore South Bruny properly, including the wilderness at Labillardiere Peninsula and some of the best oysters you'll eat anywhere

DAY14

Bruny Island back to Hobart

1.5 hrs driving · from Kettering

  • Slow morning on the island. If you stayed two nights and haven't done South Bruny yet, this is the morning for it
  • Ferry back to Kettering and drive north into Hobart
  • Drop the car and gear and you're done
  • Spare time before your flight? Salamanca waterfront for a last lunch or MONA if it's a Friday to Monday

💡 Before you go

  • You'll need a Parks Pass for Port Arthur, Tasman Peninsula, Maria Island, Freycinet, Cradle Mountain and Mt Field. The Tasmanian Holiday Pass covers everything and is worth buying before you go
  • Book ahead: Freycinet and Cradle Mountain campgrounds fill fast in summer. Maria Island ferry needs to be booked ahead in peak season. Gordon River Cruise books out weeks in advance in January and February
  • Stock up on groceries in Hobart on Day 1. Do a proper shop again in Launceston on Day 9. East and west coast towns have limited supermarkets
  • Fuel up before leaving Strahan heading inland. Stations get sparse in the centre of the island
  • Download offline maps before you leave. Signal drops out around Cradle Mountain, the west coast and parts of the east coast
  • Bruny Island ferry does not need to be booked ahead. Just turn up at Kettering
