Most Explora customers pick up their car in the morning and want to know what to do with a few hours before heading out. Here is our route, all walkable and worth it.
Start here · 8 to 9am
Salamanca is the best first impression Hobart has to offer. A row of Georgian sandstone warehouses built in the 1830s, now full of galleries, cafes, and independent shops. Spend 20 minutes walking the length of it. On Saturday mornings the market fills the entire street, over 300 stalls with food, art, crafts, and live music. One of the best markets in Australia.
Practical tip
Saturday only: the Salamanca Market runs 8:30am to 3pm every Saturday. Any other day you get the street and shops, not the market.
10 min walk · 9 to 9:30am
Walk up the hill behind Salamanca and you are in Battery Point, one of the best-preserved historic neighbourhoods in Australia. Narrow streets, tiny cottages with English gardens, a pub that has been running since 1847. Walk “Arthur Circus”, a circular street of Georgian cottages around a small green.
Practical tip
Jackman and McRoss bakery is in Battery Point and is genuinely excellent. Get there early, it fills up fast and the good pastries go quickly.
10 min walk back · 9:30 to 10am
Walk down to Constitution Dock, the working fishing harbour right in the middle of the city. Fishing boats unload here, the fish punts sell fresh seafood from the dock, and the view across to Mt Wellington is the one that ends up in every photo. TMAG (Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery) is free and opens at 10am.
Practical tip
The fish punts sell scallop pies and fish and chips from the dock. This is the correct Hobart breakfast if you are visiting for the first time.
Optional · 10am onwards
MONA is one of the most talked-about museums in the world, built underground in a private sandstone peninsula 12km up the Derwent River. Take the MONA ROMA ferry from Brooke Street Pier. Allow at least 3 hours inside.
Practical tip
MONA is closed on Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Book ferry tickets ahead in peak season. Entry: adults $39, under 18 free.
Before you leave · any time
The summit of Mt Wellington (kunanyi) is 1,270m and sits directly behind the city. On a clear day the view takes in the whole of Hobart, the Derwent estuary, and out to sea. The road is sealed and takes about 20 minutes from the CBD, perfect last stop before heading out.
Practical tip
The summit road closes in icy or dangerous conditions. Check the Hobart City Council website before heading up in winter. No charge to drive up.
