DAY1

Hobart to Strahan via Mt Field

4.5 hrs driving · the big first day, but worth pushing through

Camp tonight: Big4 Strahan Holiday Retreat (around $50 per night) or free camping at Strahan Beach.

DAY2

Strahan to Cradle Mountain

2.5 hrs driving · an early start if you want the Gordon River Cruise

Camp tonight: Cradle Mountain Fishery and Camping (around $30 per night). It gets cold up here even in summer. Our sleeping bags are rated for it.

DAY3

Cradle Mountain to Launceston

2.5hrs driving · the alpine morning

Camp tonight: Discovery Parks Launceston or free camping near the Tamar River.

DAY4

Launceston to Bay of Fires

2.5hrs driving · the drive northeast is genuinely beautiful

Camp tonight: Swimcart Beach or Jeanneret Beach, completely free and right on the water, no booking needed. Cosy Corner North is another favourite a bit further along. In peak season arrive by early afternoon to get a good spot.

DAY5

Full day at Bay of Fires

No driving · the day most people say was their favourite

Bay of Fires | Explora

Camp tonight: Same spot as last night. You’ve earned the extra night.

DAY6

Bay of Fires to Maria Island

2 hrs driving · to Triabunna, then 30 min ferry to the island

Camp tonight: Darlington Campground on the island if you’re staying overnight, free with your Parks Pass. Or Orford Beachside Holiday Park on the mainland (around $40 per night) if you’re heading back on the ferry.

DAY7

Back to Hobart

1.5 hrs driving · easy final day
